NEGATIVE BUSINESS GROWTH. Is there anything like this?

The title probably made you double check? Well, the topic is a sensitive one, and not only that, many business owners especially the newbies do not believe this happens. Those in the professional fields may understand this better, it could have been discussed at a meeting, or a conference or not. Anyways, i want to talk about this in few lines. It took me time to accept there is a thing like this, but having done my business for few years (over 20 years precisely), trust me i know better now.

“Growth is positive, or let me phrase this differently, growth is meant to be positive but we all know that in everything there are always exceptions. Talking about growth, i will relate it to trees, this is the first example that came to mind because i remember while growing up, there was a pawpaw tree in a small yard beside our house. This tree will have small pawpaw, give impression of growth but nothing comes up at the end of the season. In my place, they call this kind of pawpaw trees “masculine pawpaw” Growth is positive, or let me phrase this differently, growth is meant to be positive but we all know that in everything there are always exceptions. In fairness, the tree was growing pretty well with beautiful green leaves but no fruits. So what’s the point? Now lets bring it to the business roundtable discussion. What do we mean when we say your business is growing negatively?

First on the list is – You are pumping in so much money that it looks so bright and beautiful, but in the real sense of it, nothing is coming in. The real life dangerous part of this is, many business startups see the green leaves, the tall tree and they follow suit. They fall in love with business owner, fall in love with the business idea, they build their own based on it but they fail to check if the growth is the kind of growth they want or not. Who prays for a fruitless tree? No one!

As business owners, we are all generally excited about making sales and expanding our businesses more, which is indeed what i preach, but let us not forget the primary goal of every business – Getting Customers. If there are no customers to buy from your budding empire, it will crash sooner than you think. So if you are spending so much to build what is called “the outward appearance”, you are giving a false impression of growth whereas the real ingredient of growth is missing in action.

Another thing that will happen when you are rushing up the ladder could be – having too much customer issues. Set things in place like i said earlier. Your growth comes with new details that will be needing attention in the right order. If you do not create the time to solve them as they arise, they are going to become an ugly pile. You definitely don’t want this.

Your business growth is a blessing and we want to keep it that way. Therefore, do all you can as you are starting off and as you are growing in stages so that you do not lose out when the rewards are supposed to be coming in.
